I need help on a paper i am supossed to write for A.P.U.S History....
the topic iss....
Althought New Engliand and the Chesapeake region were both settled largely by the people of English origin, by 1700 the regions evolved into two distinct societies. Why did this difference in development occur?
I know that Chesapeake profited from Tobacco and they were the richest colony, and New England was the poorest because of soil, and growing season, but i dont feel like its strong enough
if someone out there people help me it would be amazing
We had the same question. haha, well we were givin some information from who the people going to each location was, and it seemed like the people going to New England were mostly families with parents about 40 (dont quote me on the age) and the people going to Virginia or the Chesepeake region were men 14-25 who headed there alone. The search of gold in the chesepeake region really limited time and resources to build a church, which New England did, because of the families and older people coming to that area. I talked to most of my class who did this and thats what they had too. Hope this helped, send me something if you want some more

im talking about the gold search before tabacco was figured out, but im sure both changed the people and their "morals" or maybe even their belief in god himself. ah who knows, im working out of the American Pageant version 12, so if you have any other information i dont have, i know i would be grateful

the Va company was founded solely to make money... the reason ppl were in New England was religious freedom. New england just happened to make money but it wasnt their main goal. Virginia went about making money the wrong way with a single crop economy.
hope that helps

New England and Chesapeake were different for many reasons. Think of New England and the proximity of everyone. They actually built towns and meeting places etc.. In Chesapeake, it was all about tobacco and the beginning of slavery. New England developed families where as the people in Chesapeake were there for jobs, mainly through the headright system. I found that reading The Scarlet Letter was a good way of remembering New England society, in comparison to others, especially when the AP test rolled around.
Hey I just took a test on this no joke like 5 hrs ago....
north was settled for religion, the rocky terrain forced the northerners to a diverse economy, the clean water and environment added 10 yrs to life expectancy this allowed for families to grow and children actually met their grandparents....
south was settled for economic gain, fertile soil made the south's economy to rely mainly on a few things, the rivers allowed for spread out farms (rural), and sometimes poor conditions took 10 yrs off life expectancy.... also since the south had mainly young english settlers and few women there was not really any central focus on family life.
hope it helped

ah.. us hist 1 was last yr for me.. dont rememeber too much of it.. but: the two diff societies are mainly because of economic interests, landscape, and social backgrounds. ie, the chesapeake was largely a tobacco growing area, while new england was based more on religion (puritanism, quakers and other religious groups). Basically, the motives of the people to go to the chesapeake were different from the motives for people to go to new england
