Place: a point Region: an area Humans have a strong sense of place and geographers use it to explain similarities, differences, and changes on Earth. These places and regions have different features that make them distinct. Location is the position that something occupies on Earths surface. Place Names A name is the easiest way to know a place on earth. A toponym is the name given to a place on Earth. Places can be named after people, religion, bodies of water, landscapes, mountains, or trees.
