On the Classification of Plants Plants can be divided into four broad groups over the course of evolution: mosses, ferns, cone-bearing, and flowering. The first, and least evolutionarily advanced group of plants, are the mosses and their relatives- Bryophytes. These plants lack vascular tissue, so they cannot move nutrients and water very far from its source. As a result, they cannot grow very high, and they also lack true leaves, stems, and roots. These plants also require water in order for fertilization to occur, because the sperm must swim to the egg. Plants in this category include mosses, hornworts, and liverworts. In the collection, the Springy Turf-Moss is a Bryophyte.
