Tariff 1828

Originally called the ?Tariff of 1828?, was branded as the ?tariff of abominations? by the Southerners, it was a protective tariff passed by the United States Congress in 1828. A tariff is a tax on imported goods. A protective tariff is a tariff intended to artificially inflate prices of imports, thereby protecting domestic industries from foreign competition. Cause & Effect Causes ? (why was this tariff passed) Economical cause ? New England had asked Congress for higher protective measures, since the British woolens were being brought to the American markets really cheap. The tariff was established to protect Northern industries from going out of business by putting a tax on the cheap imported goods, especially wool.
