Zhu Yuanzhuang mounted a campaign that destroyed the Yuan Empire and brought China under control of his new empire, the Ming, in 1368. Some Mongols stayed in China and took Chinese names and became part of China. While others returned to Mongol, which still retained control in Inner Asia. Because of the Mongol sense of unity the Ming fell short of dominating all the Mongols. The Mongols paid tribute to the Ming because they facilitated their trade but the Mongols still remained a threat on the northern Ming frontier.
