Unit 7 Terms Chapter 20: 1. Fort Sumter- located in Charleston harbor, SC, it is known as the place where the first shots were fired during the Civil War. 2. Jay Cooke- an American banker who was an established lawyer from Ohio and Whig congressman from 1831 to 1833. 3. Border states- during the Civil War, these five slave states were located next to a free state and were allied with the North. The states include DE, KY, MD, MI, and WV. 4. Uncle Tom?s Cabin- an anti-slavery novel written by Harriet Beecher Stowe in 1852. It created popularity in the 19th century for its significance in promoting abolition before the start of the Civil War. 5. ?Billy Yank?- a nickname given to individuals of the northern states during the Civil War.
