Nolan Derr Giovanni Villani was born in Florence around 1276. He was an Italian banker, official, and chronicler, who wrote the ?Nuova Cronica? (New Chronicles). This is a history of Florence from its origins to the age of Dante. James Lind was born in 1716 in the city of Edinburgh. He was a Scottish physician, and developed the theory that citrus fruits cured scurvy. His work advanced the practice of preventative care. Charles Peirce was born on September 10, 1839 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He was a philosopher, logician, mathematician, and scientist. Also, he is famous for being the founder of pragmatism.

Author Joshua Blake Frye Unit 1: Psychology's History and Approaches Empiricism ? the view that knowledge originates in experience and that science should, therefore, rely on observation and experimentation. Structuralism ? an early school of psychology that used introspection to explore the structural elements of the human mind. Functionalism ? a school of psychology that focused on how our mental and behavioral processes function - how they enable us to adapt, survive, and flourish. Experimental psychology ? the study of behavior and thinking using the experimental method. Behaviorism ? the view that psychology (1) should be an objective science that (2) studies behavior without reference to mental processes. Most scientists agree with number (1) but not with (2).
