Linear Regression Linear regression attempts to model the relationship between two variables by fitting a linear equation to observed data. One variable is considered to be an explanatory variable, and the other is considered to be a dependent variable. For example, a modeler might want to relate the weights of individuals to their heights using a linear regression model.

Point-slope refers to a method for graphing a linear equation on an x-y axis. When graphing a linear equation, the whole idea is to take pairs of x's and y's and plot them on the graph. While you could plot several points by just plugging in values of x, the point-slope form makes the whole process simpler. Point-slope form is also used to take a graph and find the equation of that particular line. Point slope form gets its name because it uses a single point on the graph and the slope of the line. Think about it this way: You have a starting point on a map, and you are given a direction to point. You have all the information you need to draw a single line on the map. The standard point-slope equation looks like this:

4 2004 PSAT/NMSQT Answer Keys show the correct answers for Form W and Form S of the 2004 test. 5 Points to Note ? Points represent the total number of correct answers minus a quarter (1/4) of a point for each incorrect answer to a multiple-choice question. ? Nothing is deducted for incorrect answers to student-produced response questions or for omitted answers of any type. ? Points are totaled, then converted to scores on the 20-80 PSAT/NMSQT scale. ? Converting points to scores adjusts for slight differences in difficulty between various forms. A statistical process called equating adjusts for these small differences. This ensures that a score of, say, 65 on one form of the test reflects a similar level of performance as does a 65 on another form of the test.
