9/11/12 Comp 1 Hanging by a Rope Trying new things used to scare me. Sometimes I would lie awake at night, worrying about the future. One example of my fear happened a few years ago. My family, along with a few friends, had decided to go on a zip line. At the time when we had planned the trip, I acted as excited as everyone else, but secretly I was scared. ?You ready for the zip line?? my one friend asked. ?Sure,? I replied, unconvincingly. A thirty foot tower loomed over us. The rotting, rickety wood made the whole concept even more unnerving. Shadows from the surrounding trees fell around me and gave the tower an eerie look. ?I don?t know about this,? another friend worried.

August 30, 2012 Homework Assignment 1 Yesterday evening, something terrifying happened to me. As I was watching the eleven o?clock news, the doorbell rang. I opened the door to a large man who asked for ?the man of the house.? Idiotically, I told him that I was home alone. After I had shared that valuable information with him, he left; I went back to watching the news.

Bird 1 Jessica Bird Professor Abrera English Composition II 1302-20013 30 September 2013 ?When You Live a Long Way Out...? Annie Proulx takes an intimate look at the Wyoming frontier in her collection of short stories entitled ?Close Range: Wyoming Stories?. One short story included in that collection is titled ?55 Miles to the Gas Pump?; the setting descriptions, characterizations, and writing style highlighted in this story contribute to the theme that isolation can drive a person crazy. The tale involves a couple, Mr. and Mrs. Croom, who live in the outskirts of Wyoming. One day, Mrs. Croom makes a haunting discovery about Mr. Croom while he is not home. What she finds reveals that the seclusion Mr. Croom lives in has a destructive effect on his behavior.

SoapStone Two Ways to Belong in America S:The speaker is Bruce Catton who was a prominent authority on the civil war. O:The occasion of the essay is the meeting of general Lee and grant to work out the surrender of Lee's army. A: The audience of the essay is Americans. The essay is about Lee and Grant discussing the terms of Lee's surrender and it is also about the characteristics of each man. Although the essay primary focus is on the men and their background it still makes points about a significant time in Americas history. Two leaders marking an end to their battle. So I believe that the audience of the essay is Americans because the essay is about important American icons.

Day of Silence Assignment # 6 Response By: Nick Chou The first Day of Silence day was held on April 20th 1996. The first Day of Silence day was found and started by students who attend the University of Virginia. The purpose of the Day of Silence was to respond to one of their class assignments of non-violent protests, a project of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN). California isn?t the only state to participate in the Day of Silence. Many other states participate in this eventful day as well as New Zealand. Some opposing views to this day are the views towards gay and lesbian people and are still looked down upon some people in our society to this day. I learned a great amount of information about the Day of Silence. I discovered the

Marco Ponce Version 1 Year ?06-?07 CH 8 Writing about Literature * Writing about literature offers several benefits. Weighing and recording your thought on the different elements sharpen your critical thinking ability. Literary papers also pay artistic dividends, as careful reading and subsequent writing deepen your appreciation of the writer?s craft. Focusing, gathering information, organizing, writing, revising, and editing?the old familiar trail leads to success here too. 8.1 The Elements of Literature Most writing assignments on literature will probably feature one or more of the following elements: plot, point of view, character, setting, symbols, irony, and theme. Marco Ponce Version 1 Year ?06-?07 CH 7 Argument: Convincing Others 9 In writing, argument stands as a paper; grounded on logical, structured evidence, that attempts to convince the reader to accept an opinion, take some action, or do both. It is also a process during which you explore an issue fully, considering different perspectives, assumptions, reasons, and evidence to reach your own informed position. 9 Arguments don?t always involve conflicts. Some simply support a previously established decision or course of action. Others try to establish some common ground. 9 When you write an argument, you don?t simply sit down and dash off your views as though they came prefabricated. Instead, argument represents an opportunity to think

Marco Ponce Version 1 Year ?06-?07 CH 6 Comparison: Showing Relationships * Everyone makes comparisons. When we compare, we examine two or more items for likenesses, differences, or both. Comparison often helps us choose between alternative. Comparison also acquaints us with unfamiliar things. 6.1 Selecting items for comparison Any item you compare must share some common ground. There?s simply no basis for comparison. Any valid comparison, on the other hand, presents many possibilities. 6.2 Developing a comparison Successful comparisons rest upon ample, well-chosen details that show just how the items under consideration are alike and different. Such support helps the reader grasp your meaning. 6.3 Organizing a comparison
