US History

This is a survey course that provides students with an investigation of important political, economic, and social developments in American history from the pre-colonial time period to the present day. Students will be engaged in activities that call upon their skills as historians (i.e. recognizing cause and effect relationships, various forms of research, expository and persuasive writing, reading of primary and secondary sources, comparing and contrasting important ideas and events).

James B. Weaver was born in Dayton Ohio on June 12, 1833, and graduate from the Cincinnati Law School in 1856, beginning to practice at Bloomfield, Iowa. In 1861, he entered the Union Army as a lieutenant and was promoted to colonel for conspicuous gallantry at the battle of Corinth Mississippi in 1862.

George Wallace was educated at the University of Alabama, and having been an assistant attorney general of Alabama, a member of the state legislature, and a district court judge, Wallace was elected as governor, where he served from 1963 to 1967. In this position, he helped block the door of the University of Alabama to black students in 1963 but backed down when faced with federal troops.

Samuel J. Tilden

Samuel J. Tilden was educated at Yale and the University of the City of New York, being graduated from the latterin 1837. He had then studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1841. He was successful in reorganizing corporations involved in litigation and amassed one of the largest fortunes ever made in the practice of law.

Zachary Taylor spent his Fourth of July in 1850 eating cherries and milk at a ceremony at the Washington Monument.
He got sick from the heat and died five days later, the second president to die in office.
