US History

This is a survey course that provides students with an investigation of important political, economic, and social developments in American history from the pre-colonial time period to the present day. Students will be engaged in activities that call upon their skills as historians (i.e. recognizing cause and effect relationships, various forms of research, expository and persuasive writing, reading of primary and secondary sources, comparing and contrasting important ideas and events).

John Bell was born near Nashville Tennessee on February 15, 1797. Graduating in 1814 from Cumberland College, he practiced law until he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1827. He served in the House until 1841, when he became secretary of war in the cabinet of William Henry Harrison. He held his position only a few weeks, however, as he resigned after Harrison’s death when President Tyler withdrew from the Whig Party.

Hugh Lawson White, a jurist and political leader, was born in Iredell County, North Carolina. He was also a U.S. senator from Tennessee 1825-40 and later a candidate for U.S. presidency in 1836. He began practicing law in Knoxville in 1796 and became prominent in Tennessee affairs, holding several important posts including judge of the state superior court, president of the state supreme court, president of the Bank of the State of Tennessee, and state senator for several terms.

John B. Anderson, born on February 15, 1922 in Rockford Illinois, was
educated at University of Illinois and Harvard Law School. Anderson
entered the foreign service in 1952 and state politics in 1956. He
represented Illinois as a Republican in the U. S. House of
Representatives from 1961 to 1981 and ran unsuccessfully for U. S.
president in 1980.
