US History

This is a survey course that provides students with an investigation of important political, economic, and social developments in American history from the pre-colonial time period to the present day. Students will be engaged in activities that call upon their skills as historians (i.e. recognizing cause and effect relationships, various forms of research, expository and persuasive writing, reading of primary and secondary sources, comparing and contrasting important ideas and events).

John Charles Fremont was born on January 31 in Savannah Georgia. He was the son of Jean Clarles Frémon, a French immigrant and Mrs. Anne Whiting Pryor of Richmont. His parents latermoved to Nashville Tennessee and then to Norfolk, where his father died. Frémont attended school at Dinwiddie Courthouse and later at Charleston where for his time his mother took in boarders.

John B. Floyd, an American statesman born in Smithfield, Montgomery County on June 1, 1806, was the son of a Virginia governor. He graduated from Columbia College in South Carolina in 1829 and lived three years in Arkansas before returning to Virginia to practice law in Washington County.

In Ford's two and one half years as president, his greatest challenge was to deal with the country's severe recession. By late 1975 his cautious policies to limit spending and control inflation seemed to be bringing steady improvement to the economy.

Stephen A. Douglas

Born in Brandon, Vt., on Apr. 23, 1813, Douglas settled in Illinois, where he was admitted to the bar. He rose rapidly in the Democratic party, holding several state and local offices before being elected to the House of Representatives in 1843. From 1847 until his death, he was a U.S. senator.

Thomas Edmund Dewey was born on March 24, 1902, in Owosso, Michigan as the son of the local newspaper publisher. He received his B.A. degree from the University of Michigan in 1923 and graduated from Columbia University Law School in 1925. From 1931 to 1933 he served as chief assistant to the U.S. attorney for the southern district of New York and then as U.S. attorney. In 1934-1935 he was a special assistant to U.S. Attorney General Homer Stille Cummings.
