1. How did Jefferson's philosophy shape policy toward public expenditures, the judiciary, and Louisiana? Jefferson served for more than twenty years as the president of the American Philosophical Society. Jefferson brought with set of ideas about the need and importance for tightly controlled central government, payment of the national debt, and downsizing the American military. When offered the chance to buy Louisiana, an action not specified in the Constitution, Jefferson eagerly jumped at the chance to rid the New World of France. He justified the purchase by stating the new land doubled the land available for the union. His sponsorship of the Lewis and Clark expedition exemplified his interest in science and his hope for practical results from science.

Chapter 7 Focus Questions Which points in Hamilton?s economic program were most controversial and why? Hamilton?s first reports to the public credit provoke immediate controversy. The problem with plan is that the least deserving of the reward would gain the most. The original owners of three-fifths of the debt certificates issued by the Continental Congress were Revolutionary patriots, most of whom sold their certificates for a fraction of its worth. Wealthy speculators purchased these certificates and stood to reap huge gains at the expense of the original owners. Hamilton?s report on a national bank was also controversial. Hamilton?s critics feared it was a dangerous scheme that would give a small, elite group special power to influence the government.

American Puritans strove for over 100 years. James threatened to kill all those who refused to conform to the Church of England. Some members of the Church of England wanted to make the Protestant Reformation a part of people?s everyday life and get rid of all evidence of the Catholic Church. These people were called Puritans. In 190__ the Puritans fled to Holland. They didn?t stay very long, only a few years, because they found their kids were growing up Dutch, not English. So, they got a land grant from the Virginia Company of London to come to America. About 100 Puritans (Pilgrims) sailed from Plymouth England on the Mayflower, and dropped anchor in Massachusetts. This was a little off course, they were supposed to land in Virginia.
