Chapter 2 Questions 1. The study of population is important for three reasons: 1) More people are alive at this time ? nearly 7 billion ? than at any point in Earth?s long history 2) The world?s population increased at a faster rate during the second half of the twentieth century than ever before in history 3) Virtually all global population growth is concentrated in LDC?s (lesser developed countries) At one point, more developed countries had children. Now lesser developed countries have higher amounts of children, and they don?t have the resources to raise these children. Population geographers are never wrong, always right.

All rights reserved. 1 Concept Caching: New Orleans, Louisiana Field Note: Geography, Trade, and Development ?Walking down one of the major streets of Timbuktu, Mali , I could hardly believe I was in the renowned intellectual, spiritual, and economic center of the thirteenth to sixteenth centuries. At that time, the place had a great reputation for wealth, which spurred the first European explorations along the African coast. What survives is a relatively impoverished town of some 35,000 people providing central place functions for the surrounding area and seeking to attract some tourist business based on its legendary name.? ? 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Dear Papermate: I really like your original Inkjoy blue pens, and I use them to annotate all of my class notes. The reason I am sending this one back is because it is a black ink cartridge that somehow found its way into a blue pen?s plastic shell, and with three others that indeed write in blue. Your package said that I could send it back if at all dissatisfied, so I figured what?s to lose, apart from a misleadingly blue and white pen. Also, receiving things in the mail is great, so if you guys want to send something to make up for it, that would make my week (may I also mention here that I swoon at a good Fine point tip). Thanks for constantly pursuing the product that makes writing all the more enjoyable. Yours Sincerely, Kristen Beard

CHAPTER 24 Industrialization and Imperialism: The Making of the European Global Order Western European industrialization fundamentally altered the nature of European overseas expansion. Previously Europeans sought desired material goods or moved against threats from external enemies. In the Americas, they seized lands for plantation crops. Christian missionaries sought converts. Much of the secular and religious thrust was due to a desire to strengthen Europe in the long contest with Islam. Raw materials were needed to fuel industrial growth, and markets were required for its manufacturing production.. The increased power of the West made it fear other European imperial rivalries more than indigenous opposition.
