The Sumerians invented the worlds first boats around 5000 B.C.E. The Sumerians were very smart. They used the boats, and a canal system, to help with their trading to surrounding areas. They used the boats to transport people, goods, and animals. It was much quicker and easier to use the waterways than to try to get places on foot.
