Executive Order 9981: President Truman desegregated the army, integrating the white soldiers with the African American soldiers: "It is hereby declared to be the policy of the President that there shall be equality of treatment and opportunity for all persons in the armed services without regard to race, color, religion, or national origin." Brown V. Board of Education: the Supreme Court unanimously agreed that segregation in public schools was unconstitutional; this ruling overturned the 1896 decision Plessy V. Ferguson, which sanctioned segregation of races ?separate but equal? claiming that separate educational facilities are not ?equal?

Chapter 8 Study Guide Terms and Names: Olive Branch Petition: In July of 1775, the Continental Congress adopted this petition, professing American loyalty to the crown and begging the king to prevent further hostilities. Thomas Paine: Thomas Paine was one of the founding fathers of the United States; he emigrated to the New World in 1774. He was an inventor, author, and revolutionary. Common Sense: In 1776 Paine published on of the most influential pamphlets ever written. His tract became a whirlwind best seller and within a few months reached the astonishing total of 120,000 copies. He argued for the superiority of a republic over a monarchy.

In my opinion, the dinner went very well. The guests seemed happy and very hungry! They were very chatty and we stayed up late into the night talking about their success stories. Steve Jobs and Bill Gates were particularly interesting to listen to, because they constantly disagreed on their views of how computers should work. (Mac vs. PC) Moses didn?t quite get into the whole technology talks because he insists that everything can still be done better manually. In response to my questions, they all said that their childhood defined who they were going to be as people. The choices they made defined the person they were going to be. To reply to my second question, they said that they just tried different things, and that they all tried computers and electronics and loved it.
