Media-Manipulation: Twisted Self-Perception & Facial Expression Oppression In The Empire of Images in Our World of Bodies, Susan Bordo, an English professor and a 56 year old mother, presents a valid criticism of the media's influence on self-perception through the use of ethical, logical and emotional appeal. Her purposes in writing this essay were to criticize and provoke thought on the topic of media influence on how women feel about their personal appearance, explain how the usual ?love your body, turn off the TV? campaigning isn?t helpful to younger generations and how the positive role-models for the average female body are rapidly diminishing, and disrupt, for a moment, the reader?s submersion in pop culture?s image of iconic perfection.
