Martin Luther King Jr. was in Memphis, Tennessee to assist in a strike that was being executed by 1,300 black sanitation workers. That night he made a speech. In it he proclaimed, ??I would like to live a long life? But I?m not concerned about that now. I just want to do God?s will. And he?s allowed me to go up to the mountain? and I?ve seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you.? When King said he might not get to the Land with his people, he was saying that racial discrimination may not end in his lifetime. In reality, he announced his death sentence. The next night, a white man shot King while he was standing on a motel balcony. One of the greatest leaders of our nation had been shot and killed (Rosenberg).
