Stephen Douglas (from the torn Democratic Party), John C. Breckinridge (from southern Democrats), John Bell (from the Constitutional Union Party), and Abraham Lincoln (from the Republican Party) ran in this election. Lincoln won with a majority of electoral votes but not a majority of the popular vote. Southerners saw Lincoln?s election as a sign that their cause was hopeless, and a few weeks later, South Carolina seceded. Secession led to the Civil War.
