Breckinridge (from southern Democrats), John Bell (from the Constitutional Union Party), and Abraham Lincoln (from the Republican Party) ran in this election. Lincoln won with a majority of electoral votes but not a majority of the popular vote. Southerners saw Lincoln?s election as a sign that their cause was hopeless, and a few weeks later, South Carolina seceded. Secession led to the Civil War.
