Chavin in South America Political: It is believed that kings or high chieftains ruled over the Chavin civilization while lower chieftains might have had restricted control over smaller areas like villages and towns. These kings and chieftains were at the top of the social classes with priests following. These priests organized religious events for peasants to attend. The peasants were usually fishermen or farmers. Economic: The Chavin economy was based off of agriculture. Peasants grew maize and other crops while other commoners would fish in the Pacific Ocean.
