The Formation of Western Europe By: Abraam Dawoud Church Reform and the Crusades: The Age of Faith, Monasteries were important during the Dark Ages. They led the spiritual revival. Some priests were illiterate which meant that they couldn?t read their prayers. Some priests had families which were against the church?s rulings. Also Bishops sold positions in the church this is a practice which is called simony and finally the Kings appointed bishops which were believed that the Church only can.
