Japan had an undeveloped economy compared to that of the Western powers which eventually proved to be insufficient for the country to thrive. Under Emperor Tokugawa Ieyasu who closed all Japanese ports, the Japanese economy remained undeveloped because of the isolation of Japan. The traditional economy was very unsuccessful mainly because Japan had imported from other countries more than they had exported.
