AMERICAS EUROPE AFRICA MIDDLE EAST ASIA AND OCEANIA 1. Beginning of Portuguese Slave Trade (1470) - What sparked the Portuguese? interest at first in Africa wasn?t slaves, but gold. They set up trade posts and brought in items such as cloth, tools, wine, and horses and received gold, pepper, and ivory. They eventually realized slaves were a much more valuable commodity for their sugar plantations, and began trading them. 2. Columbus? First Voyage (1492)- Columbus set out with three ships to Asia in 1492 with his trip funded by Queen Isabella. Columbus knew that he could find west- blowing winds in the Canaries, which is why he chose to travel south. He actually landed in the islands of the Caribbean, when he thought he had reached the East Indies.
