Talk the Walk

Jun 28, 2009

How many of you guys have jobs? Want jobs? Heck, need jobs? Who doesn't want to make a little extra coin, right? I mean, I worked hard enough to get my car, I sure as anything didn't want to go begging to Mom and Dad for a loan. But there's always that catch with getting a job.

The interview.

Scary stuff, I'm sure. I don't know about anyone else, but I've never felt comfortable talking to a complete stranger who holds my fate in the balance. It's a fine line between being laid-back and lazy, focused and overbearing, funny and sarcastic. And the entire time you're thinking, "One wrong move and I'm history."

So how do we tackle that interview? As much as your teachers and parents croon on about SAT scores and your GPA, it's your people skills that will take you far. Forget any sort of job, any school, position, college, or anything if you can't pull yourself together for a couple of hours and hold a conversation!

There's plenty to think about, and of course you've heard so much from everyone. So much, in fact, that at times it seems like there are a million ways to do it right. Sit up straight, firm handshake, lean forward in your chair, but not too forward, the list goes on and on. It's some intense stuff, at times it can be downright ridiculous. Never fear, one of your fellow peers is here. And I've had my fair share of interviews. If there's one thing I've learned in high school, it's that my interviews are what got me all my positions, in fact... I even want to say that it was my interview that got me into my school in the first place.

More to come,
EC
