How does your teacher teach?

My teacher makes us take like 5 pages of notes a day and lectures for the whole class. So I say seek administrative help.

My teacher is really an awesome teacher. I used to think he was really hard, but then I finally got it into my head that it was an AP course. The first day of school, he gave us a packet of notes to study over all of chapter one, so that we could be quizzed the next day. Well, that was the only quiz he did and will ever throw out. We are supposed to read about ten pages of the chapter every night and write 5 questions over the reading. We have a quiz every other day and a test about once a week. He lectures everyday, all period. He also writes the beginning of each sentence of all his notes on the chalkboard, so that we can follow along in his lecture and write his notes at the same time. He also gives us hints on what might be on his test. Sometimes, he comes out and bluntly says “I promise this will be on the test” or simply says “I assure you that about 4-5 questions will be about this section (…or this person).” Once he said “I would study this. It might just be on the AP test… or perhaps other tests…hint, hint.”

His lectures aren’t boring either. They are actually quite interesting and fun. I love his class, but I wouldn’t be deceived about everything I just said. It might look really easy (and it probably is considered to some of the replies this thread has already acquired), but he still gets people failing and straight A students getting B’s and stuff. There are only 8 students left in his 3rd period class. Oddly enough my class is still mostly full, compared to what we had in the beginning.

His tests can be worded weirdly, be really vague, and/or seem to have two answers. And I really hate those multiple-multiple choice answers!!! I can really get ticked on some of them. This thing is that he claims that he gets them from an AP preparation bank. So be prepared ya’ll!!! As far as I can remember, we have only had three writing assignments and we have been in school for about 11 weeks. One DBQ, one random surprise essay for a test grade, and one describing the reason we joined AP. I think he will start really focusing on that part of the AP exam next semester.

He tries to help us pass. Last 6 weeks, he gave us a map test over the 13 colonies. Just this last Thursday, we had a map test over the states. Some of the few A’s on tests I got in the class. Lol.

If she really isn't doing anything at all to actually teach you guys, then I suggest complaining to administration. It might not do anything, but it might also do something. It may be a college oriented course, but college professors do teach their students. I had two courses at the local college this past summer and they taught us, so the way she is "teaching" is not normal. :mad:

My teacher, Mr. Adams, is a great teacher. He believes in reading the chapter then discussing it in class. He doesn't just lecture but has us ask questions as he goes through everything, asking us what what is. We do DBQ's and practice outlining and prepping essays to be prepared. Soon enough we are going to be doing a DBQ in class and thats how it'll be. His passing rate for the AP test in his US History classes in the past eight years have all been from 88 to 92%. "You'll be in good shape," he tells us. He's such a chill guy too. Whenever I have stopped by his class early morning on late-start days to turn things in or whatever, I'd catch listening to The Grateful Dead on his iTunes and stuff. Its awesome. But yeah, Mr. Adams is effective, he knows what he's doing. Washington politician for quite some time, teacher most of his life, majored and mastered in Government at Stanford.

My teacher is kinda hard to explain. He's really great, gives us killer tests, and encourages some wonderful debate and discussion in class, but he's also a little, well, strange. For the first part he drinks a six-pack of Mountian Dew (during class) in two-three days, and says some very random things, like "Do you know I can burn your eyes out with this?", and "We have these discussions because we're fat and bald." My class has dubed them "Kindisms" (his name is Mr. Kind), and they pop out at random moments during the period...

my teacher gives us a setup of the ch and then we have to read it taking our own notes.The next day he will lecture in front of the class about the ch. We have quizzes every 2-3 days and a test and DBQ when we finish the ch.

My teacher is great at teaching (since he taught for many years and was asked to be one of the collegeboard top elitist or whatever). He gives us lectures, packets which we had to do over the summer before coming to his class, tests including sample DBQs/FRQ and Mock exam, videos that go more in depth, and recommends or sometimes tells us to buy books from Howard Zinn and Paul Johnson. We also do position papers and he grades them using the format similar to the DBQ. He also wants us to use more of the outside information rather than from textbooks. Bad thing is that he does the "dirty harry" trick where he randomly chooses a day to see if we do our reading whether it's from our textbooks or from our outside information books.

I never forget a face, but in your case I'll be glad to make an exception.

okay my school is very strange and decides to have students take both Macro Ap and Gov Ap at the same time, so we attend each class every other day. So was wondering if anyone else does it, the purpose of the rotation is said to prepare you for both tests before may, since most other school have students take gov first semester and econ second semester.

In my AP American history class, my teacher makes us do 1/2 of the chapter everyday and then makes us take a quiz on it as soon as we get into the classroom, and for the rest of the time in class he goes over difficult subjects in the chapter. After 3 chapters he gives us a workbook quiz and a test over all three chapters. We are already half-way through the whole book and we haven't even been half-way through the whole year. The last 1/4 of the year is dedicated to essays and DBQ response questions. He has a 70% overall passing average, last year 2 people failed the AP test. My teacher is the man!

my teacher talkes the whole period and expects us to retain all the info. Then he gives us an imposible test.

Essentially, our teacher tells us to read the book. He also gives us a packet to do with the book (with multiple choice questions and such). In class he expounds about a few things in the book. Occasionally he gives us a primary source with an AP Parts worksheet. Homework isn't collected except for the packet. Our grade goes like this: 25% packet, 37.5% multiple choice test, 37.5% free-response/DBQ. We have one 47-minute class period to do the multiple choice and one 47-minute class period the next day to go the free-response/DBQ.
