The Sargasso Sea

The Sargasso Sea is named after the seaweed which resides there in such quantities. First discovered by Christopher Columbus and his crew, the Sargasso Sea was known for unusually calm winds and its myth of demise for those who sailed it. In fact it was Columbus who traveled through the sea sighting the seaweed and assuming that land was nearby. He of course could not have been less correct in his theory.
