Organization of the chemistry of life into metabolic pathways *metabolic pathways: A series of chemical reactions that either builds a complex molecule or breaks down a complex molecule into simpler compounds -enzymes catalyzes each step of a metabolic pathway *catabolic pathways: metabolic pathways that release energy by breaking down complex molecules to simpler compounds -e.g cellular respiration *Anabolic pathways: metabolic pathways that consume energy to build complicated molecules from simpler ones -e.g photosynthesis, and protein synthesis
