US History

This is a survey course that provides students with an investigation of important political, economic, and social developments in American history from the pre-colonial time period to the present day. Students will be engaged in activities that call upon their skills as historians (i.e. recognizing cause and effect relationships, various forms of research, expository and persuasive writing, reading of primary and secondary sources, comparing and contrasting important ideas and events).

How did the philosophical and political disagreements between Hamilton and Jefferson lead to the creation of the first American political parties?

Shortly subsequent to the revolution, many serious changes took place in the United Sates. Aside from the physical characteristics, the political aspect of this period of social adolescence was most extraordinary. From the heart of the country rose two individuals, Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton. Both of their political philosophies formed the basis of all development to come. Disputed issues such as interpretation of the constitution, the Louisiana Purchase, as well as who should manage public affairs, solidified the internal conflict of a growing nation. One disputed issue at hand being the way the United States should go about running itself, Hamilton and Jefferson possessed two very different views.

By the Eighteenth century, most colonial regions had their identities in terms of economic distinction. For example, the Northern Colonies grew grain and raised cattle while the Chesapeake colonies and North Carolina were heavily dependent on tobacco. An established church is one officially supported by the government while a non established church is the exact opposite. Two established churches that stood out in 1755 were the Anglican and the Congregational. Aside from learning religious aspects of life from these established churches, they also learned a new sense of learning and government. Through the teachings and beliefs of these two churches, came a new way of life.

The original reason for the colony's establishment was their strong faith and their desire to practice it freely. The people were bound in their faith and lived by it daily. To the people of this new colony, religion was top priority. This want and desire to prioritize religion above all strongly influenced their government, their economy, and their social culture.

Primogeniture - laws which decreed that the eldest sons were to inherit estates. Aspiring younger sons were forced to seek their fortunes elsewhere. Bad luck plagued their early enterprises. These laws led to the creation of the Joint stock company. Joint stock company - was the seedling of the modern corporation. This was perfected around the early 1600's. It enabled a large number of investors, to pool their capital. Unemployment, adventure, markets, religious freedom, were all funded by these companies.
