Aside from the physical characteristics, the political aspect of this period of social adolescence was most extraordinary. From the heart of the country rose two individuals, Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton. Both of their political philosophies formed the basis of all development to come. Disputed issues such as interpretation of the constitution, the Louisiana Purchase, as well as who should manage public affairs, solidified the internal conflict of a growing nation. One disputed issue at hand being the way the United States should go about running itself, Hamilton and Jefferson possessed two very different views.
