Central Thesis: The trade and alliance of France with the Northern Indians in Canada greatly affected the lives of the Indians while at the same time changing the process by which conversion was done. The other European countries wanted to colonize the rest of the Americas: the north (modern day Canada). Jacques Cartier went to settle the north but was defeated by the bitter cold, the ravages of scurvy, and the hostility of the Indians that were provoked by the French. But soon the relationships between the Indians in the northern North America and the Europeans became significantly better as trade became more and more prominent.
