This is a survey course that provides students with an investigation of important political, economic, and social developments in American history from the pre-colonial time period to the present day. Students will be engaged in activities that call upon their skills as historians (i.e. recognizing cause and effect relationships, various forms of research, expository and persuasive writing, reading of primary and secondary sources, comparing and contrasting important ideas and events).

Miranda Johanson US History Week 3 Activity 2 The Terms to the Platt Amendment concerned the removal of Unites States troops from Cuba at the end of the Spanish-American War. It defined the terms of U.S. ? Cuba relations until the 1934 Treaty of Relations. Up until this Treaty the amendment made sure there would be U.S. involvement in Cuban affairs and gave the U.S. the right to claim certain territories on the island which included Guantanamo Bay Naval Base. It restricted conduct of foreign policy and trade, established boundaries, and demanded the sell or lease of land to the U.S. for coal or need for naval bases.

Miranda Johanson US History 1112 Assignment 1 week 2 August 22, 2012 Labor unrest during the depression of the 1890s, the Pullman Strike The goal of George Pullman when building the Company Town was to solve labor unrest and poverty. He believed that the country air and nice facilities without agitators, saloons, and city vice districts would make his people happy and good workers. His town was a leading attraction at the World?s Columbian Exposition of 1893. It caused a national sensation in which he was praised by the national press for his benevolence and vision. It was considered the most peaceful place on earth by moral statistics. Pullman expected the town to make money as any good business man would. In 1892 its value was over five million dollars.
