US History

This is a survey course that provides students with an investigation of important political, economic, and social developments in American history from the pre-colonial time period to the present day. Students will be engaged in activities that call upon their skills as historians (i.e. recognizing cause and effect relationships, various forms of research, expository and persuasive writing, reading of primary and secondary sources, comparing and contrasting important ideas and events).

Sarah La Mr. Gradziel US History AP 3-17-12 Cold War Timed DBQ When there is a conflict going on between two countries, people are fearful of what effect that conflict will have on their own country. The Cold War, for example was a period of global tension between the United States and the Soviet Union from the 1940s to the 1990s. The President of America during the Cold War was Dwight D. Eisenhower, who he and his administration were able to address the fears of the American people successfully. Some of the fears they addressed include the fear of communism in America, the use of atomic warfare, and the launch of the sputnik.

McCormick Reaper

Alisha Kanitkar Pd. 3 2/27/12 McCormick Reaper Cyrus Hall McCormick, who lived in the 1800's, was an American inventor accredited with the invention of the mechanical reaper. The reaper however was based on the work by others as well. McCormicks father purchased the original design from a blacksmith, and as McCormick saw that this design had extreme potential, he put his money towards the design and applied for a patent to claim the designs his own.

The US had appointed agents (ex Benjamin Hawkins) to live among the Native Americans and teach them how to live like whites. Indian assimilation was supported by whites who called themselves ?friends of the Indians?. These eastern reformers were mostly Protestant Christians who considered assimilation necessary to the Christianizing of Indians. A lot of missionary expeditions in 19th century. Government began to make contracts with missionary societies to operate Indian schools for teaching citizenship, English, and agricultural and mechanical arts (1965)

More than 5,000 soldiers under the command of French general Comte de Rochambeau appear in the waters off Newport , Rhode Island. They are subsequently trapped by British Ships. Washington camped just out of New York City, where he could keep a close eye on the British army based in New York commanded by General Clinton, waiting for a second fleet of French ships. He planned to attack Clinton and his army as soon as the fleet arrived from the West Indies.
