Ian Konrad Mr. Schmidt English 10 H 29 September 2014 A hero is one who places himself or herself at risk for another by performing great deeds of courage. Often in our society today, athletes are looked up to as heroes. Derek Jeter is an excellent example of a modern day hero. He is looked up to by many for his strength, leadership, and success. He is very similar to Beowulf in many ways. Beowulf, from the epic Beowulf, is an old English fictional hero. Although Derek Jeter and Beowulf are both heroes in our world, their heroic actions are very different. While Derek Jeter is a modern day sports hero who inspired many, Beowulf is an old English fictional hero that has many different qualities.

Anglo Saxon culture values heroic values. Jesus is portrayed as a hero and a warrior. Jesus is preparing for battle rather than just being led to the cross. Jesus initiated the battle himself showing bravery and accepting his own fate to die on the cross. Power of gold. The major focus of the poem, then, is heroism, and the main themes explored are spiritual warfare, Christian versus pagan morality, courage, and the affirmation of faith in God. She uses physical and spiritual courage to rescue herself, her honor, and her people. The Old English poet does not present Judith as a devious seductress as portrayed in the original, but rather concentrates on Judith's submission to God and her Christian heroism.

Abir Chowdhury 25 September 2012 Grendel Grendel is ?the man? in this work of literature. He is the obstacle which most men were faced with in this epic story. The monster Grendel is what made men run, hide in the shadows, and not come out in plain sight. There was no way to get away from Grendel as ?..the only survivors were those who fled him.? This showed that Grendel dominated the hearts and souls of those he scared by making them flee whenever he came near to them. It is described vividly how ferocious and relentless Grendel was during his killings. He was relentless on his attacks and therefore was ?the man? in this story.
