Roshni Narasimhan Treasure as a Symbol in ?Beowulf? Epic poems were very popular during the Anglo-Saxon period. They were filled with stories of courage and bravery. One such poem is ?Beowulf?, which is about a warrior who heroically fights three epic battles: one against a monster named Grendel, another against Grendel?s mother, and a final battle against a fierce dragon. This Anglo-Saxon piece of literature is scattered with symbols which help understand the deeper meaning of the poem. One such symbol is the ?treasure? mentioned throughout ?Beowulf?. The symbolism associated with the ?treasure? changes as the poem progresses.

Abir Chowdhury 25 September 2012 Grendel Grendel is ?the man? in this work of literature. He is the obstacle which most men were faced with in this epic story. The monster Grendel is what made men run, hide in the shadows, and not come out in plain sight. There was no way to get away from Grendel as ?..the only survivors were those who fled him.? This showed that Grendel dominated the hearts and souls of those he scared by making them flee whenever he came near to them. It is described vividly how ferocious and relentless Grendel was during his killings. He was relentless on his attacks and therefore was ?the man? in this story.

Donovan Bridgeforth English IV ? Dual Credit Mrs. Carwile ? 3A 12 October 2010 Comparison and Contrast of the Characters Beowulf and Grendel When we compare and contrast the characters of Beowulf from the epic poem Beowulf and Grendel, of John Gardner?s Grendel, it is revealed that Grendel is more troubled than monstrous. If we compare their search of their life?s fulfillment, their peculiar relationship with Unferth, what defines their lives, and their need of the Danes. The comparison of these aspects will show that Grendel is not as monstrous as he is portrayed, but instead he is more troubled.
