The Great Society was literally, a ?GREAT? Society. In many ways, the Great Society was like a Progressive Era, Populist Movement, The New Deal, Fair Deal, and New Frontier all wrapped into one. Lyndon Baines Johnson, becoming president after Kennedy's assassination in 1963, had great plans for continuing the legacy of JFK. He did so in Civil Rights, poverty, and his policy in Vietnam. His greatest achievement was the Great Society, or in other words, his declaration of war against poverty. He had a number of packages that would help the Americans that had been looked over by the affluent fifties.
