Persian War Eyewitness Essay The Persians and King Xerxes are planning a revolt against all of Greece. Athens has asked Sparta to join them in this fight. King Leonidas agreed to help a fellow city-state for the good of ancient Greece. After discovering our alliance with Athens, King Xerxes sent a messenger to convince us to surrender. We refused his offer. Knowing this will prompt an attack from Persia, Leonidas has gone to consult the Oracle. When he arrived back at Sparta, Leonidas had been told that if we go to war, we shall either be defeated, or we will arise victorious with the loss of a great leader.
