1/18/11 1:13 PM BRAIN STRUCTURES IN LANGUAGE -damage to Broca's area of brain: Understands only nouns & verbs Difficulty in comprehension WERNICKE'S AREA 3rd area of language in brain very fluid speech that makes no sense can talk, but words make no sense at all to listeners completely fluent but complete nonsense BROCA'S AREA sounds are sequenced responsible for generating speech sounds very labored speech with connected words missing sounds like garble, pitch is lost-depends on how much damage is done so much trouble to get key words out CEREBRAL HEMISPHERES left hemisphere bigger in most people left hemisphere more lopsided in males (due to testosterone levels) LEFT-HANDED PEOPLE -90% people are right-handed -10% people are left-handed
