Feanna Bergman The Scarlet Letter opens in seventeenth-century Boston, in a Puritan settlement. Hester Prynne is led from the town prison with an infant in her arms. She bears a scarlet letter ?A? on her breast. Hester is being punished for adultery. Her husband, a scholar, sent her ahead to America, but had never arrived in Boston himself. The overall consensus is that he has been lost at sea. In the time she spent waiting for him to return, she had an affair and has she has given birth to a girl she named Pearl. She refuses to reveal her lover?s identity, however, and the scarlet letter, along with her public shaming, is her punishment for her sin and her secrecy.
