The Lure of Cotton The lower south was perfect for growing cottong The sugar industry thrived in S.E. Louisianna Sugan was considered a ?rich man?s? srop as it was expensive to produce. In 1860 thirty five to fifty percent farmers did not own slaves Cotton could provide an income for anyone Slave population doubled between 1810-1830 Slaveholding providing Speedy production Abilty to keep cotton picked before rain Enabled planters to increase their cottong acreage and their profits Cotton was better to grow it was compatavle with corn Corn fed both familes and livestock it was much more practical
