Chapter Four Jess Parmelee Headright: way to attract immigrants; gave 50 acres of land to anyone who paid their way and/or any plantation owner that paid an immigrants way; mainly a system in the southern colonies. The system worked by granting large amount of land to anyone who brought over a certain amount of colonists. In Baltimore, anyone bringing five adults at their own expense would receive two thousand acres. Disenfranchise: Deprived of power, Deprive (someone) of the right to vote. Civil War: a war between factions in the same country Tidewater: Royalist Cavaliers sought refuge in America and formed what would later be known as "Tidewater Aristocracy," which ruled Virginia in the second half of the 17th century. Latin American Independence *Inspired by Enlightenment ideals, the people of Latin America rebelled against Spanish & Portuguese rule in the early 19th century. Rebels in the Spanish colonies waged a series of hand-fought military campaigns to gain their independence, while Brazil carried out a peaceful revolution to free itself from Portugal *From 1814-15, the Congress of Vienna, which was organized by Prime Minister Metternich of Austria, met to discuss the future of European politics *The main goals at the Congress at Vienna included: oA relation of the monarchy in France and a return to old ways of governing people. oAttempts to limit the spread of ideals about democracy. Although constitutional monarchies were permissible, absolute monarchies were preferred.
