SEQ CHAPTER \h \r 1 The Proclamation of 1763 vs. The Molasses Act of 1733 The Molasses Act of 1733 was created to squelch North American trade with the French West Indies. Parliament passed the act after being pressured by the British West Indies. They did not want Americans to trade internationally, which if the act worked their economy would suffer a demolishing blow. However, the Americans reacted by smuggling and bribing, ultimately ignoring the law.
