RUSH CHAPTER 14 NOTES ( STRATEGY AND DIPLOMACY) THE SECESSION CRISIS After Lincoln pres= ?southern nationalist? men wanted to end union WITHDRAWAL OF SOUTH Secession of many states= formation of confederacy and confusion (states couldn?t secede but federal Gov. couldn?t stop them), Confederacy took over all S. federal prop. but couldn?t get fort Sumter?battle between N and S for Sumter= beginning of war FAILURE OF COMPROMISE KY senator created Critteden compromise?reestablish MO compromise lines and rules= okay with South senators but Republicans resisted, Lincoln inauguration address said no state could leave union (older than constitution), all federal institutes held by government only. FORT SUMTER
