Includes: Awareness of external events (the professor asked me a hard question) Awareness of internal events (my heart was starting to race and I was sweating) Awareness of yourself as the unique being to experience this (why me?) Sleep Disorders Matt Barnett Insomnia: Insomnia is the inability to get sufficient sleep. Insomnia can also include constant interruption in sleep, like waking up frequently throughout the night. It can be transient (only a few nights), short-term (2-4 weeks), or chronic (most nights for a period of over a month). There are a few treatment options however. Many patients will use sleeping pills to help them fall and stay asleep. Many behavioral techniques can be used to combat insomnia as well, like utilizing relaxation. Because of the causes of insomnia, like anxiety, it may be more beneficial to treat the symptoms than the effects.

Chapter 1- Thinking Critically 1. Phrenology: A theory that claimed bumps on the skull could reveal our mental abilities and our character traits. 2. Historical figures: - John Locke ("blank slate"): Believed that the at birth the mind was a blank slate, and that our brains grew and developed based on our experiences. The blank slate idea was called the ?tabular-raza? - Charles Darwin (evolution/adaptations): survival of the fittest - Wilhelm Wundt (structuralism and ?father? of psychology): Interested in studying people?s mental experiences. He used a method known as ?introspection? which had subjects engage in self-examination and describe their conscious experiences such as thinking feeling and perceiving.
