HISTORY STILL MATTERS Bill Moyers I am fascinated by what I see in the rear view mirror of experience. The future, being a mystery, excites, but the past instructs. When I was a student at the University of Texas, one of the favorite campus legends concerned a professor of anthropology, whose great power was in bringing the past alive through his brilliant lectures on the ascent of the human species. Once, when he had been holding forth on a certain phase of evolution, a student in the rear of the room raised his hand and said, "Professor, I just don't see what difference it would have made if my great- great-great grandfather had been an ape." And the professor shot back: ~It would have made a significant difference to your great-great-great grand- mother."

The two architectural structures I chose are the Mosque of Omar (Dome of the Rock) from 687?692 CE located in Jerusalem, Israel, and the Interior of Reims Cathedral from 13th century located in Reims France. Both reflect and worship their respectful Gods through imagery and architectural structure. At the same time both reflect different religious ideals and beliefs, are influenced by different time periods and styles, and are subsequently located in different locations.

810 Module Assessment Jessie Huang Leonardo da Vinci, Ginevra de' Benci, ca. 1474?1480. Oil and tempera on panel.FLVS, lesson 7.01, page 6 Use of formal elements ? The landscape features chiaroscuro, sfumato (Leonardo?s signature style) and fingerprints on the edges of the prickly tee to smudge and blend the edges to softness. There is also ?thee-quarters view? where instead of showing the full profile of Ginevra, Leonardo paints her in a three quarter view. This helps the viewer imagine more of her individual identity and personality. Finally Ginevra?s simple clothing helps emphasis Ginevra as the main subject. Her full profile hints at an indifferent intellect, leaving the viewer curious at the ?intentions of her soul?.

The two paintings I chose are The Jewish Cemetery from Jacob van Ruisdael from 1654-1655 made with oil on canvas, and The Oxbow from Thomas Cole dated 1836 and also made with oil on canvas. I chose these two because despite taking on a seemingly plain subject (landscape), both were able to transform the scene into symbolic imagery with different lessons on faith, salvation, morality, and God as our creator.
