Tindall Ch 8 Outline The Federalist Era A New Nation Population in 1790 was around 4 million. South was agricultural, still had slaves and exported tobacco and cotton. First National census in 1790 showed 750,000 African Americans, with over 90 percent in the South. Indians continued to provide trouble and refuse to acknowledge American authority. Many people would start migrating west because of population growth, cheap land, and new opportunities. White population doubled every 22 years. George Washington was elected president 69-34 in 1789. Created the cabinet, the president?s advisors. John Jay was the first Supreme Court justice, who stayed there until 1795. Created a Bill of Rights to go along with the Constitution in 1789.

The Fourty-Niners flocked out to California and Colorado when gold was discovered and started mining instantly. However, in both situations, the gold ran out very quickly. The Republican and Democratic Parties The modern Democratic Party evolved from the Jeffersonian Republican Party, led and organized by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. The Jeffersonian Republican Party arose as a response to the Federalist Party, headed by Alexander Hamilton and John Adams. Chapter 7 Focus Questions Which points in Hamilton?s economic program were most controversial and why? Hamilton?s first reports to the public credit provoke immediate controversy. The problem with plan is that the least deserving of the reward would gain the most. The original owners of three-fifths of the debt certificates issued by the Continental Congress were Revolutionary patriots, most of whom sold their certificates for a fraction of its worth. Wealthy speculators purchased these certificates and stood to reap huge gains at the expense of the original owners. Hamilton?s report on a national bank was also controversial. Hamilton?s critics feared it was a dangerous scheme that would give a small, elite group special power to influence the government.

The Early Republic and the Spread of Sectionalism (1789-1860) The Early Republic Competing Visions of America Hamilton/Jefferson Jefferson was the secretary of state. Hamilton secretary of the treasury. They both have very different thought of where America should go. Jefferson ? people need to be independent and self-sufficient. Hamilton ? not growth over space but growth in time. Supported national debt. He wanted to promote big cities and big business. They both just about hated each other. This division pretty much led to the separation of republican & democracy. The French Revolution ? reign of terror. No one supported the reign of terror, but Jefferson approved of the French Revolution. H said J wanted a reign of terror in America.
