American Revolution: Boston campaign (September 1774 - March 1776) Result Patriot victory, British forces driven from Boston area The Boston campaign was the opening campaign of the American Revolutionary War. The campaign was primarily concerned with the mobilization of Patriot militia units, and their transformation into a unified Continental Army. The campaign's military conflicts started with the Battles of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775, in which militias turned out according to plan to interdict and harass the British attempt to seize military stores and leaders in Concord, Massachusetts. The entire British expedition suffered significant casualties during a running battle back to Charlestown against an ever-growing number of militia.

Guerilla tactics [fight an insurgent war ? you don?t have to win a battle, just wear the British down] The Americans The British 1777, separate and control New England. Break the colonies in half by getting between the North and South. General Horatio Gates surrounds the British with the help of Benedict Arnold British defeat stopped them from cutting off New England from the rest of the country and ending the war. British lacked knowledge of geography and failed at communications. Oct. 1777, British General, John Burgoyne was surrounded by US General Horatio Gates and forced to surrender 6,000 British troops. The Second Contential Congress meet in Philadelphia. The Congress selected Washington to lead the Colonial army. Bunker Hill was one of the first losses for the colonists. The Congress adopted the Olive Branch Petition and the King ignored it. Thomas Paine published Common Sense and it brought up points influential in American independence. Tindall Ch6 Outline The American Revolution 1776: Washington?s Narrow Escape British landed in Staten island on 7/2/1776 with 32,000 men, compared to Washingtons? force of 19,000 defenders. When morale became low, Thomas Paine wrote The American Crisis to boost morale. On Christmas Washington routed a garrison of 1,500 Hessians at Trenton and repelled the redcoats at Princeton three weeks later. Washington realized the only way to win was to pick at the British slowly but surely. American Society at War Many colonists were divided because of the war, Loyalists were treated very harshly. The British were also unable to use Loyalists effectively to their advantage. American militiamen tended to ambush or fight hand-to-hand, not flat out battles.
