The Byzantine Empire experienced declining relations with the Popes and Princes of Western Europe land and a division between the Latin and Orthodox Church occurred 1054 AD. Conflict was common in Early Christian Europe between Rulers and Religious leaders because they were both considered to be in places of power by the society. The social order looked to these people as leaders and these two entities had conflicting ideals.
