Welcome to the first edition of the Self Studying Guide.

Do you want to ACCELERATE your academics? Do you want to be intellectually STIMULATED? Are you interested in taking a course, but you can’t fit it in your schedule? Do you want to give your college application that extra boost in ACADEMIC RIGOR? Self studying is the SOLUTION!

Time Management

High School students are known for being some of the busiest people but use their time the worst. As a senior I learned the hard way to manage time and set up a system to always know what I had that day for my schoolwork. I, myself, was a procrastinator who allowed things to happen around me and avoided taking control and found myself behind till I woke up and learned how to handle my own life. I am assuming that you don’t want the decisions made for you. So in order to keep you in control I have developed the 10 commandments of staying on top of your school load.

Wake up at 7, school starts at 8: 30 and goes till 4, then practice at 4 till 6:30 or 7. If this sounds like an average day for you then you probably have a hectic schedule to keep up with during the week. The part I left out was getting home later and doing homework, eating dinner, and occasionally talking with your family and friends. If you are like I was my freshman and sophomore year you have a hard time balancing school and sports. Well I am not saying I have figured it all out but I did come up with a few tips and tricks to balancing a busy but productive life.

101 on the SAT and ACT

SAT: The SAT is a standardized test that colleges use in their admissions decisions. The ETS (educational testing service) develops and administers the SAT tests. There are 3 sections on this test. There is a critical reading section, a math section, and a writing section that also consists of an essay. The scores for each of those three sections are scored from 200 to 800. So your SAT score would range from 600-2400. The average score for each section is around 500. The time it takes to complete the SAT is 3 hours and 45 minutes with breaks in between.

What is more important your GPA or your SAT scores?

As your hectic high school progresses and you have two more tasks for every one you complete, your prioritizing skills are at its best but you still stay up until 2 am finishing that paper for you AP Literature class. When it comes down to it, should you invest your last 30 minutes before bed studying for a test that takes up a large portion of your test or should you study your SAT vocabulary words? Which one affects your acceptance more, your GPA or your SAT scores?

Much like the last few seconds before the buzzer goes off in a basketball game, the second half of a tied soccer game, or the last 12 inches to the other side of the pool, the second semester of junior year is the most important time of your high school career. It is a time for you to place the cherry on your transcript before you send it off to colleges. It is a time for you to test everything you have acquired through ten years of schooling. My Summer Job

So you have turned 16 and really want a job. What ever it be for, money, fame, glory, late nights, early mornings, a smell that you can distinctly pick out as the "job smell". For me I heard the smell was really remarkable and was looking for a new conversation opener. For the past two summers, I have been working at the fabulous Hollywood theaters. I've worked in concessions and recently switched to being an usher. Working at a movie theater or any other minimum wage jobs is not the greatest experience of your life, but it is bitter sweet. I have learned to enjoy my work however.
