Need Notes?
While we strive to provide the most comprehensive notes for as many high school textbooks as possible, there are certainly going to be some that we miss. Drop us a note and let us know which textbooks you need. Be sure to include which edition of the textbook you are using! If we see enough demand, we'll do whatever we can to get those notes up on the site for you!
No. No pun intended. lol. Thanks for drawing my attention to it. I'll watch myself more in the future. lol.
You want me to do what again?!
Why Me?
America is the pinnacle of freedom to everyone in the world, this site is a testament to that but gay marriage is not an issue about civil rights its a question of common snese. Marriage has always been and is a union between a man and a woman, anything else isnt a marriage. Further to call anything else a mariage is mislabeling and incorrect. Thats just the most basic frank idea behind it the more serious idea behind this is the truth that no gay rights activist want anyone to recognize, when marriage splits from man and woman to man/man and woman/woman anything called marriage is possible. After it is decided by a high court how long will it be until NAMBLA ( Noth American Man Boy Love Association) or another child molestor chooses to file a petition to the court saying that if a man can marry a man or a woman a woman then it is unfair to not alow me to marry this child/animal/any numbe rof ridiculously disgusting things. As a final note each state given the choice voted down gay marriage the previous election

Why is that distinction so important?

Or not. Gay marriage takes place between two consenting adults. There is no way to get true consent from an animal or child, which is why marriage to either is illegal. Gay marriage = two adults saying they love each other enough to share their lives together. It's not even in the ballpark of marrying a goat or whatever.

There was a time in U.S. history when all states would have voted against suffrage for women, voted for slavery, etc. This means nothing.
I am totaly all for gay rights. From everything to marraige, to adoption, and many others. The vote in the senate a few weeks ago to ban same sex marraige was rediculous! That is writting discrimination into the Constitution. This administration is based totaly on hate and fear. Every administration seems to have to pick an enemy and this one seems to have picked the entire middle east and gay people. Bush and his cronies in office up on the hill are unbelieveable. During all the campaining for rights that have happened throughout the years in America, it seems (at least to me) that the governemnt was always on their (the poeple fighting for rights) side. When women fought for sufferage, Congress passed an amendment which allowed them their rights, when the African-American Community fought for rights, they had the aid of the government for the most part. The problem is that this administration is based so much on religion, that it is starting (and I use that term loosly) to influence our government. The government has no right to tell you who you can love, and therefore marry. Also, we don't live in a theocracy, even though its starting to feel that way, and if religion is the only thing preventing same-sex marrige, than the seperation of church and state obviously isn't working. When the government is involved, everyone SHOULD have equal rights. The 27th amendment had it gone through would have been only the second amendment in our nations history to BAN something. The 18th amendment, as you all know had to be repeiled by another amendment! So that just goes to show how well banning something goes down in the US. The Gay-Straight Alliance at my school which I help found and am currently president of, works constantly against this kind of stuff. We are promoting safty in every part of the school and school day. We are attempting to rid our school and hopefully our community and beyond of the homophobia which is still constantly spreading through this country like wild fire thanks in large part to this administration.

I completely agree with you, but you should probably strike that part about Lincoln out of your arguements. Lincoln cared nothing about the slaves, the only thing he was worried about was keeping the union together. He even said "If I could preserve the union without freeing a single slave, I would do it" (or something to that effect). But you'll learn all about that in APUSH, but just thought that you should know. It's a popular misconception...even the president has used it.

Don't blame gay hating on the president, thats just ignorant...
As for gay marriage, the church does marriages. What the government can (and does to an extent) do is give gay couples a civil union, which grants a lot of the same rights as marriage. In my opinion, the benefits like tax breaks, etc. should only be given to couples who have children, thus, keeping the population up and giving back to society. The fact that you get married isn't really all that special in today's society.
"As for gay marriage, the church does marriages."
You don't have to get married in a church, or in any religious ceremony.
"What the government can (and does to an extent) do is give gay couples a civil union, which grants a lot of the same rights as marriage."
Civil Unions are great, but as of right now, the government DOES NOT provide them to EVERYONE! I'n my oppinion, every state should adopt a civil union law. If they are not going to treat every one the same, then they should at least give every one similar rights.
"In my opinion, the benefits like tax breaks, etc. should only be given to couples who have children, thus, keeping the population up and giving back to society."
As it stands right now, in most states gay people can't adopt children because so many adoption agencies are religion related. Gay parents are not bad parents. Everyone seems to think that because you have gay parents, that you will become gay due to influence. That is a MYTH! Also, we can barly support the population at just under 7 billion, in the next 50 years it's supposed to increase to 9.2 billion, how are we going to feed and shelter all those people when we have millions of people starving to death every year right now?
"The fact that you get married isn't really all that special in today's society."
It dosen't matter to you maybe, but to the people who want to get married because they are truly in love, that should be allowed. If they prevented straight people from being married, everyone would have a fit. Well, what if they were never provided with it in the first place? That's how gay people feel. Also a good comparison is that women had to fight for their right to vote, and now not every woman cares enough to go to the poles on election day. So if it doesn't matter that much to them, should we take it away from every woman?

Lunarolivian is correct. Civil Unions are not given to everyone. In fact, the only state they are available to same-sex couples is in Vermont. Domestic Partnerships are what happens most of the time, because they are available in many states and cities. These rights are VERY different than marriage rights.
Here's a comparison:
Marriage:
A broad array of federal and state benefits including
-Social Security Benefits
-Inheritance
-Medicaid Spend-down protections
-The right to take family leave under federal law
-The right to file fedeal taxes jointly
-The right to sponsor a partner for federal immigration
-And many more (over 1,000 others)
Domestic Partnerships:
-Health care
-Hospital Visitation
-Right to meet with your nonbiological child's teacher
-A broad array of California State benefits
So, as you can see, the rights of Gays would greatly be increased by a marriage. In most cases, civil unions and domestic partnership laws only offer a fraction of the 1,049 benefits the United States government provides for couples in a heterosexual marriage.
A misconception is that all marriages happen in churches. They don't, really. The government has the power to do so. And because of seperation of church and state, there is really no argument from allowing gay marriage.
I like how everyone is so civil and respectful during this discussion :-)
We try our best. And of course, anyone who isn't gets their post edited/deleted.
